The Story Behind UCL: A League Born Out of Necessity

United Cricket Lads (UCL), formerly Abu Dhabi Cricket Lads (ADCL), was founded on May 17, 2018, out of a need for fairness in the local cricketing scene. At the time, amateur cricketers—working professionals like engineers, doctors, bankers, and businessmen—had no structured platform to play competitive cricket without being overshadowed by professional "ringers." These local tournaments were financially driven, with skilled professionals dominating the game, leaving recreational players as mere spectators or financial backers rather than valued participants.

Recognizing this imbalance, Usman Nazar Rathore took the initiative to create a cricketing space where passion, rather than profit, dictated the game. The idea was not just to form a team but to build a system—one that welcomed amateur players, ensured fair competition, and allowed enthusiasts to enjoy the sport on a level playing field. This led to the formation of "Batch Zero," a core group of dedicated players who aimed to change the status quo.

From humble beginnings, UCL quickly established itself, participating in major tournaments, securing victories in the SA Sports Open Tournament and the ALAN Sportsplex Ramadan Tournament, and even competing internationally in Malaysia. Over time, the vision of a self-sustained cricket league materialized, transforming into a structured entity with over 500 players, 12 teams, and operations across three cities in the UAE.

Today, UCL stands as a testament to what passion and unity can achieve. It runs its own league with exclusive formats such as Super 8 T20, The 100, and The Clashes (T20 Format). More than just a competition, UCL sponsors the most affordable grassroots cricket, funds player and team awards, and maintains a strong digital presence, ensuring that cricket remains accessible, organized, and enjoyable for all.

What started as a fight for fair cricket has now become the benchmark for structured amateur cricket in the UAE—and the journey continues.
